Minot Air Force Base population growing

While Grand Forks Air Force Base has lost a lot of personnel because of a mission change, the population of Minot Air Force Base is on the rise.

The Minot base has 12,865 personnel, nearly 1,000 more than a year ago. The Minot Daily News reports that the jump is due mainly to the addition of a second squadron of B-52 bombers. That happened in September 2009.

The base also oversees Minuteman III missiles in underground silos in central and western North Dakota.

The Grand Forks base is transitioning from refueling tankers to drones. About 3,500 people are at the base, but the population is expected to grow by about 1,000 in the next year.
